Feast of Ages: The Medieval World gives your children a beautiful feast of the Middle Ages, from the fall of Rome to the Reformation. It is designed to help your children make connections through history, literature, geography, art, and enrichments such as poetry, artist study, music, and song. Everything is tied to the Middle Ages. 

Your children will meet Attila the Hun, Marco Polo, Johannes Gutenberg and more through biographical works. They’ll encounter Sherwood Forest and medieval Korea, meet a castle page and a traveling minstrel boy, and follow a Viking adventure through historical fiction. Mythology includes Norse myths so your children can hear the same stories the Viking children of the Middle Ages would have heard. Poetry introduces your child to medieval works and the story of the English language. They’ll encounter both Old and Middle English. Geography, writing, and art are all tied to the history lessons. Alongside their music lessons, they’ll encounter medieval folk songs and carols, hymns, and composer works from throughout the Middle Ages. Six artists are included in this guide: Fra Angelico, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Hans Holbein the Younger, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

This 36-week, Charlotte Mason-inspired curriculum is fully scripted, open-and-go, and designed to be used primarily family-style for Forms 1 and 2 (Grades 1 through 6). This guide covers everything except for math, science, and some language arts (phonics, spelling, and grammar). The language arts elements included in this guide are: literature through read alouds and independent reading assignments and writing through narration and notebooking. Optional poetry readings and recitations are also provided.

  • Your teacher guide gives you lessons week-by-week. Each week’s lessons are scripted with links provided to make teaching easier. You certainly don’t have to follow the scripts, but they are there on the days when you need them. (You know, those days when everything is feeling harder than it should, and homeschooling is taking twice as long as a regular day?) 

    Each week gives you a verse that connects with that week’s lesson and Scripture memory to work on for the term. Every week includes an art or sewing lesson, a music lesson (a video-based solfa course plus medieval folk songs and carols), artist study, literature read alouds and independent reading assignments for the week, a lesson on poetry or the story of the English language plus poetry recitation, and a history and geography lesson that includes optional mapwork, a Book of Centuries entry, and a hands-on history activity. On art weeks, the history activity will be art-based and reinforce the concepts learned in that week’s art lesson.

    Lessons are presented as weeks rather than a day-by-day schedule so that you can assign the work however is best for your family’s schedule. My own family’s schedule using the complete guide is included as a sample in the guide.

  • All 30 artwork pages are provided as a separate printable in order to keep picture quality high but the teacher guide file a more manageable size. There are five prints for each of the six artists included in the guide. I like to print these and bind them into a separate spiral book from my teacher guide so that I can easily display them during our artist study. You could also bind them in with your main guide after printing both, or keep them as separate, unbound prints. I also like to print the artwork pages using the “two pages per sheet” option on my printer. This will print them at half-size. Each week, I add a new, half-sized print to our artwork wall.

  • A variety of notebooking page options are provided as printables. You can choose between drawn narration and written narration, with an ultra wide-ruled option (dashed midlines) and a more typical wide-ruled option. A combination of drawn and written narration is also provided for both the ultra wide-ruled lines and typical wide-ruled lines.

  • A coloring page has been provided for each week to go along with the history spine reading. There is a full-page option and also hybrid options with the coloring page image plus written narration lines.

  • Term-by-term booklists, weekly supply lists by subject, weekly links by subject, simple guidance on how to narrate and notebook, artist study questions, and a children’s catechism are all provided in the intro and appendices of the teacher guide. Links to reference guides and materials for poetry, the story of the English language, music, and artwork are also provided.

  • For my own children, the beauty and fullness of a Charlotte Mason homeschool consistently felt more like drowning than feasting. Ten-minute lessons regularly became ten-minute lessons plus a ten-minute transition time. So I created Feast of Ages: The Medieval World. It uses the history lesson as the spine for every other subject. Keeping everything connected through a single time period allows me to combine the history with geography, composer study, and hymns each week. I can combine poetry and music easily into our weekly teatime. Artist study falls naturally into our art or sewing lesson. Basically, all of our enrichment subjects are woven into a core subject, creating variety within the core subject lesson while the single historical time period unifies it all.
