Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Literature Guide
A Charlotte Mason-inspired literature study for Forms 1–3 | 10 Lessons | 34-Page Printable PDF
Step inside Willy Wonka's extraordinary chocolate factory with this literature guide for Roald Dahl's beloved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
From the excitement of finding a Golden Ticket to the peculiar inventions and unforgettable characters inside Mr. Wonka's factory, this wonderful children's novel is filled with opportunities for imagination, meaningful discussion, and literary discovery.
I created this guide to help you and your children enjoy a wonderful work of literature while exploring the language, literary techniques, and ideas that make it memorable. Drawing from both Charlotte Mason's philosophy and classical education, the lessons encourage children to narrate what they've read, think carefully about the characters and their choices, and begin noticing how authors use language to tell a story.
But I also believe that literature should be enjoyed for its own sake! You don't need to turn every chapter into a lengthy lesson to make it educational. This guide is designed to be flexible, allowing you to enjoy the reading, choose the activities that interest your children, and adapt the study to your family's homeschool.
What's Included?
This 34-page literature guide divides Charlie and the Chocolate Factory into 10 lessons, covering three chapters each. Each lesson includes:
Words to Know: Vocabulary words selected from the reading to help children develop familiarity with rich and interesting language.
The Seed: A short introduction to spark curiosity and anticipation before beginning the next chapters.
Narration & Discussion: Charlotte Mason-inspired oral, written, and creative narration suggestions, along with thoughtful discussion questions that encourage deeper understanding.
Literary Devices: Gentle introductions to literary concepts such as characterization, hyperbole, suspense, wordplay, poetic justice, satire, and theme, using examples from the novel.
Grammar Rules: Short grammar lessons connected to the reading, helping children recognize and apply language concepts in the context of real literature.
Hands-On Enrichment: Two optional activities per lesson, including creative projects, simple science experiments, and imaginative challenges inspired by the story.
You'll also receive four creative writing assignments exploring descriptive, narrative, and persuasive writing, along with character analysis. Suggestions for younger and older students make it easy to adapt the assignments to your child's abilities.
The guide concludes with a Charlotte Mason-inspired literature examination, encouraging children to share what they remember and understand through narration rather than memorization.
A Literature Study for the Whole Family
Designed for Forms 1–3 (approximately Grades 1–8), this guide can be used with children of different ages and abilities.
Younger students can enjoy the book as a read-aloud, practice oral narration, and explore the story through drawing and hands-on activities. Older students can read independently, develop written narrations, explore literary techniques in greater depth, and complete more advanced writing assignments.
It's also wonderful for family-style learning! In our own homeschool, we enjoy reading together, discussing the story, and choosing just a few enrichment activities that particularly interest my children.
You can complete one lesson each week for a gentle 10-week literature study or move through the guide at a pace that works best for your family.
My hope is that this guide helps your family enjoy a delightful story, grow in literary understanding, and create wonderful memories around a good book.
Above all, enjoy the reading together!
